2022-woohoo!

We're excited to partner with Musicians Foundation

Musicians Foundation provides relief in the form of direct financial grants paying bills for musicians and their families who are in need.  They've been at it since 1914 and are currently dedicating 100% of their efforts to their CV19 Relief program, helping to support countless musicians from every walk of life who are out of work due to Covid 19 as 2020 brought them a 600% increase in applications.  We think they're swell so every $7 Song purchase you make gives them $2 to help them keep up their good work in the world.

THANK YOU & NamastYAY to you, you music loving do gooder!  You're swell, too.

FAQs

Why buy when I can stream music for free?

Most people are unaware that independent musicians like me and my collaborators are barely paid when our music is streamed. Streaming music has become a means of promotion in the digital age.  We put our music on streaming services so that fans can find us, get to know us, and hopefully come see our live performances and buy some swag at our shows to help us do all the necessary things like buy dinner, pay bills, and educate our kiddos.  Of course ultimately we're making music for your enjoyment, but we need to make a living, too.  Whenever I tell anyone, they're shocked to learn that we're paid less than pennies for every play from a streaming service and streaming services do not pay us to host our music on their site.

Literally, streaming services currently pay on average hundredths and thousandths of a penny per stream.  When one song is streamed 1,000 times on Spotify, the artist is paid just over $4!  Uh, hello?  $4?!  In the 21st Century?!  Not even kidding.

Here's a breakdown of averages paid per stream by the biggest streaming services out there today (please note that country of song origin can play a role in how much an artist is paid, and usually that means they're paid less than what's listed here):

  • Napster: $0.019 per stream

  • Tidal: $0.01284 per stream

  • Apple Music: $0.00783 per stream

  • Google Play: $0.00676 per stream

  • Deezer: $0.0064 per stream

  • Spotify: $0.00437 per stream

  • Amazon: $0.00402 per stream

  • Pandora: $0.00133 per stream

  • YouTube: $0.0.00069 per stream

Let those numbers sink in for a moment.  I'll wait.

Magareeshi $7 Songs are sold exclusively here and are not available on streaming services for these reasons.  We deeply value artistry, musicality, and all the work, skills, talent, training, time, energy, effort and love that goes into making every piece of music so it's our mission to support ourselves and other artists while keeping things fair and affordable for you.

We hope you'll keep this in mind next time you go looking for music.  It's totally cool to pay for a streaming service and enjoy all that unlimited music!  I mean, music makes the world a better place, amiright?!  And, full disclosure, in my household we subscribe to Tidal (distinctly because they pay musicians a little better than most other streaming services and have amazing sound quality).  Just please, when you find artists whose music really moves you, consider going to them directly and buying music from them.  You'll be their rockstar!

Why $7?

The number seven is an auspicious one.  Some might even say it's magical.  And this Maggie likes MAGic!

There are countless ways in which the number seven is meaningful to life on earth.  To name a few... In mysticism seven represents deep inner knowing and intuitive connection.  The Seventh Generation Principal originating with the Haudenosaunee people teaches us to take actions in our lives that will benefit the next seven generations - a principal I take to heart.  We know that all things are made up of energy and, dating back thousands of years, there's an understanding that within the amazing human body there are seven energy vortexes called chakras that maintain balance, health and happiness in us all.  Each moon cycle is 27 days and 7 hours long.  There are seven days in a week thanks to those ancient Babylonians studying the celestial bodies above them.

Also, aside from the fact that I love a good alliteration, $7 is a reasonably inexpensive amount for you to pay that still allows us to make a fair wage and spread the wealth-love for the greater good.

What kind of music do you make?

Short answer:  It varies.  Click around on this page to browse til your ears delight.

Longer answer:  Every song you find on The Seven Dollar Songs Project is an original composition.  One of the cool things about sharing one-off songs (aka, "singles") is that they don't necessarily have to fall under the category of any one genre.  We do not limit creativity at Magareeshi Productions and we strive to share music that appeals to many different people.  That said, most of the songs written by me are going to be a bit pop, a bit 60's/70's folk, a bit independent rock, a bit musical theatre.  That's just what comes through me and my muses.  Some of my bigger musical influences are Carol King, The Beatles, Nelly McKay, Keane, Stevie Wonder, Taylor Swift, Billy Holiday, Eva Cassidy, Led Zeppelin, The Grateful Dead, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Lin Manuel Miranda (particularly the musical Hamilton), Dolly Parton, Bruce Springsteen, and, well, there are more, but I can't think of them all right now.

As the project grows, we hope to introduce you to many other brilliant independent musicians  It's really important to me to share the work of artists creating music in their own unique ways.  You can expect to find instrumentals, jazz, soul, R&B... You'll just have to check back each season.
