Music is MAGic!
Music is meaningful. Music is necessary. Music is all around.
Like yoga, music has the power to connect someone to their higher self, their deepest truth, their greatest joy, and to others in the world around them on a spiritual level that’s uniquely special.
Think about it, there has never been a world without music.
And, music notes read the same in every language.
All people are born musical and our bodies are our first instruments. Deep thoughts, huh?
I have a gift for making up songs. I focus on lyrics and melodies and then when I’m ready to turn something into a full fledged song, I bring it to my favorite person to collaborate with: Vincent Verderame. As married partners in time, we collaborate on everything, but he’s especially gifted in the music department. He even has a fancy degree in the stuff! I don’t. I grew up singing and performing in musical theatre, but mostly I just hear music in the ethers allllllll the time and sometimes I am able to listen real close and capture a little of its magic.
Here’s our latest diddy, “Gandhi Song” to give you an idea of my personal writing style. It’s a little folk and a lot fun.
I’m quite good at taking most topics and turning them into a lyrical song. One of my favorite things to do is fit odd words into a song’s phrasing (see the video above in which one of the verses utilizes both “Radhakrishnan” and “Bhagavadgita” — that was a particularly good day for hearing muses!)
I’ve recently learned (one too many times) that if you wake me up because you’re a little out of sorts in the middle of the night, I can make up a silly song about pretty much anything on the spot to help sooth you. Among my best is a song about Stella the lemur who lives in Madagascar spending her days walking sideways in the dirt, never wearing a shirt. Yes, I did find a way to rhyme Madagascar. Now. If only I could figure out how to fit in the scientific names “lemuroidea” and “lemuriformes.” It’ll come to me.
Because I believe kids are magic, too, I made a kids album with my above mentioned favorite collaborator. I wrote and sang all the songs and Vincent did everything else: arranging; playing every single instrument including a Tonka truck toy thingamajig and some of my twinkly-jingle anklets from back in my Grateful Dead days; produced and mixed the whole thing; made album cover art; washed dishes and made healthy snacks; wore great hats; created a rig for playing percussion with his feet while playing guitar with his hands so the two of us could have a full sized band sound; art directed, shot and edited our video...... I’m sure there was more.
Check out our album for the wee kids in your life here. (grownups like it, too)
If you have a momentous occasion coming up and you’d like an original song written and/or recorded for you (or your little lemur), hit me up. I’d love to make you some MAGic Music!
